Due giorni con Björn e Cris, Tecnica/blizzard photo e video schooting

12/11 Siamo in macchina, la mia macchina, bella carica di attrezzatura da montagna e oltre 20 kg di attrezzatura photo e video.
Sono le 18, ci troviamo difronte la fabbrica della Forst di Merano, dove abbiamo appuntamento con Christian.

Sta arrivando anche un altro amico conosciuto a Gressonney in occasione del Xperience del 2009, Luca Albrisi.

Luca è arrivato, è con una sua collega Sara, sono di ritorno da Val Senales, noi invece stiamo andando proprio lì!
Dopo un'oretta ci troviamo tutti insieme seduti ad un grande tavolo con una dozzina di bicchieri di birra vuoti. E' ora di andare via!
Dopo una cena tirolese, abbastanza pesante, ci ritroviamo in albergo per un briefing sul lavoro che ci aspetta: fotografare i nostri amici del team Blizzard/tecnica e realizzare un video promo con i nuovi prodotti 2012/2013 con scene di vita e azione.

Sono appena le 6 e30 ed già è ora di andare, Björn ci aspetta alla base della funivia. Oggi è Domenica e gli inpianti da sci sono pienissimi di gente.
Ci troviamo alla base della funivia, ci sono centinaia di piccoli sciatori con i loro allenatori!
Dopo una lunga trafila con moltissimi bagagli al seguito siamo finalmente alla reception del nostro albergo a 3200 metri di quota.
Ci prepariamo in fretta e dopo pochi minuti siamo già operativi su una cresta nevosa con il pro rider Björn Herregger, il Team Manager Christian Leitchner e mio fratello/collega Roberto, anche lui membro del team Tecnica/Blizzard.

Roberto si occuperà principalmente di filmare, io farò soprattutto foto.
Ci aspetta una lunga giornata!

Abbiamo portato con noi, oltre una decina di ottiche, tre corpi macchina (eos 5d, 7d, eos 1d) e un nuovo giocattolino: il volante.
Il volante? Si, è un vero volante di una Fiat Punto al quale è stato levato l'airbag e montato all'interno un supporto per GoPro Hero 1080p.

Il volante serve da supporto per la mini camera per riprese di azione in movimento oltre che per riprese a terra.
Utilizziamo il nuovo giocattolo per filmare una curva in powder con il volante posizionato vicinissomo al rider. Una bella curva! IL volante è completamente ricoperto di neve. Sarà una ripresa speciale.

E' quasi l'ora del tramonto e approfittiamo della luce bassa per fare un po' di scatti con flash.
Ho portato per l'occasione un Flash Elinchrome Ranger Quadra con softbox da 40cm.
Posiziono il flash vicino una casetta in legno un po' malandata ma molto caratteristica.
Riusciamo a tirare fuori delle ottime foto e riprese video molto suggestive che sicuramente andranno sul nuovo catalogo e sul web.

Approfitto del tramonto per fare un timelapse del sole che sparisce, sarà un valore aggiunto al video!

Dopo una buona cena e le solite birre, ci ritrovano tutti insieme a visionare il materiale foto e video sul mio mac.
Siamo soddisfatti, abbiamo avuto un ottimo feedback da Björn e Cristian, anche se manca ancora qualcosa…..

Sono le 6, è quasi l'alba! non credevo che io e Roberto ci saremmo alzati per fare un timelapse!
L'idea delle montagne che si illuminano della calda e rosea luce dell'alba e l'ombra che si accorcia nella vallata era troppo allettante per restare al letto.
Siamo sulla terrazza dell'albergo, imposto il telecomando attaccato alla canon 5d mkII con 24-70 f2,8L e…… torno al letto! più tardi recupererò l'attrezzatura.

Dopo una giornata trascorsa a fare soprattutto dettagli dei materiali Tecnica e Blizzard abbiamo deciso di fare una discesa su un pendio a nord dove la neve era ancora buona. E' stata un bella discesa, un po' impegnativa per le molte rocce affioranti!

Recuperiamo il materiale e ripartiamo alla volta dell'Aquila. Siamo abbastanza stanchi ma felici di esserci rimessi gli sci ai piedi, di aver lavorato nel migliore dei modi e soprattutto in ottima compagnia.
Presto girerà sul web il video e le foto.

Dov'è il Turkmenistan?

Circa due mesi fa mi arriva una mail da k-events (compagnia leader nell'organizzazione di grandi eventi e cerimonie): C'è un grande evento in Turkmenistan, ti interessa?
Non avevo mai sentito nominare quel paese!
Mi sono subito lanciato su Wikypedia: Il Turkmenistan (turk. Türkmenistan) è uno stato dell'Asia centrale confinante con l'Afghanistan, l'Iran, il Kazakistan e l'Uzbekistan. Si affaccia sul Mar Caspio. Fino al 1991 fece parte dell'Unione Sovietica. È ricco di giacimenti di gas.
La superficie è di 488.100 km², la popolazione di 4.603.244 abitanti. La capitale è Aşgabat.

Chi sa cosa avranno da festeggiare in quel posto.
Dopo qualche giorno, finalmente, mi è stato tolto il grande dubbio: nel turkmneistan, il 28 ottobre, si festeggia il ventennale dalla liberazione dalla russia. Una super cerimonia con un grande budgets e dai grandi numeri.
Allora il Turkmenistan è una repubblica, un paese civile? Veramente no: c'è il dittatore!
Ero comunque molto eccitato e non vedevo l'ora di partire per questa nuova avventura, avrei raccontato, con le mie foto, un grande evento in un posto di cui non sapevo praticamente nulla.
Perché sul web riguardo il turkmenistan non si trova niente, solo pochissime foto, questa cosa mi sembrava un po' strana….
23 Ottobre. Sono all'aeroporto di Roma Fiumicino e attendo il volo per Istambul dove farò 2 ore di scalo prima di partire per Ashgabat, la città dove si svolgerà l'evento.
C'è uno splendido tramonto e al mio gate svolazzano i piccioni!

Arrivo alle 22:15 ad Istambul: l'aeroporto è molto particolare ed è popolato da gente veramente strana e dai costumi più disparati.
Salgo, dopo un tè caldo, sull'aereo che mi porterà in Turkmenistan, il viaggio è ancora lungo.
Arrivo all'alba ad Ashgabat, sono alla dogana turkmena, consegno la lettera d'incarico (in quel paese si entra solo per motivi di lavoro) pago i 200$ per il visto e dopo oltre mezz'ora sono in machina con altri Italiani che alloggiano al mio stesso albergo.
Sono le 5 del mattino; ci inoltriamo nella città ed è tutto illuminato: neon coloratissimi, scritte, schermi a led con immagini del presidente (dittatore!), palazzi bianchissimi e dorati e strade larghissime!

Il mio albergo si trova nel quartiere presidenziale: ministeri, teatri e tante altre sfarzose costruzioni.
Sarà tutta così questa città?
In giro per strada non c'è nessuno, a parte un poliziotto ogni 2/300 metri!
Sono nella mia camera d'albergo, è molto bella, mi avvicino alla grande finestra coperta dalle tende ma è tutto bloccato, il vetro non si apre, immagino perché sono proprio davanti la casa del dittatore del turkmenistan
24/10.
Ore 10:00 Sveglia! Mi affaccio alla finestra, è una splendida giornata, le cupole d'oro dei palazzi riflettono la luce del sole.

Ore 11, dopo 3 ore di sonno sono già su un'auto che mi porta allo stadio.
Lo stadio nuovo di Ashgabat: il terzo stadio in una città che non fa neanche un campionato di calcio!
Lo stadio però è fondamentale per un città importante!
Dopo un po' di burocrazia vengo accompagnato nel mio ufficio. Incontro Juri, un amico conosciuto in Ucraina e un ragazzo di nome Saverio che mi assisterà nel lavoro.
Saverio è un bravo fotografo, gli piace il reportage, quest'annuo è stato in Lybia e Tunisia nel periodi più caldo.
Formiamo un ottimo team, faremo un buon lavoro.
Lo stadio è strano, non è molto convenzionale, inoltre non c'è ancora l'erba ma un rivestimento in legno che stanno dipingendo proprio adesso di bianco.

C'è moltissima gente che lavora, lo stadio è un cantiere: dentro e fuori! Dipingono, stuccano, attaccano grandi adesivi con i loghi del paese, piantano alberelli, asfaltando la strada che porta allo stadio!

Ci sono centinaia di donne, molte dai denti d'oro, che spostano la sabbia da una parte all'altra della strada!

Dentro lo stadio stanno già provando gli acrobati e le Salmandre (un gruppo specializzato in danze con fuoco e fiamme")

Dopo poco ci fermano 2 poliziotti in borghese che ci chiedono chi eravamo e soprattutto se avevamo fatto foto in giro.
Ci controllano le macchine fotografiche. Saverio aveva fatto qualche scatto vicino lo stadio in un quartiere di periferia.
I due ci costringono a cancellare le foto fatte in strada. Ci dicono chiaramente che potevamo fotografare solo all'interno dello stadio. Adesso hanno i nostri nomi, dobbiamo muoverci con cautela!
Subito amici, che erano lì già da mesi, mi spiegano un po' di regole per vivere meglio in quel paese: in turkmenistan non si può fumare per strada, non si possono scattare foto per strada, non si può stare in strada dopo le 23, non ci sono locali aperti la sera, e soprattutto mi fanno notare che se porti a casa una donna Turkmena rischi 15 giorni di carcere!
Ho subito capito che quello non era il paese dei balocchi!
Dopo una cena al catering dello stadio, una mensa più che dignitosa con un cuoco italiano, mi posiziono per fare un po' di foto alle prove, senza costumi ma importanti per capire come sarà articolato lo show.

Per fortuna io dormo al Nissa, uno dei due grandi alberghi della città, un hotel di lusso Turkmeno, una piccola oasi felice dove puoi bere un "Peroncino" anche a tarda notte!

25/10.
Oggi è il giorno della prova generale.
Ho fatto un po' di giri per lo stadio, ho esaminato tutte le prospettive.
Farò le foto soprattutto dal centro della tribuna, di fronte all'enorme schermo a led, il più grande mai utilizzato in una cerimonia.
Sopra l'ultima fila di posti a sedere, dov'è la sala regia, c'è una piattaforma dove sono posizionati due segui persona, lì piazzerò una camera remotata con un interval timer in modo da fotografare tutto lo show e potermi muovere lateralmente senza perdere scatti importanti.
Credo di avere le idee abbastanza chiare. Faccio un giro per lo stadio facendo qualche foto di backstage insieme a Saverio nell'attesa che inizi la prova.

La prova generale non viene molto apprezzata da un rappresentante del governo che vuole vederne un'altra il giorno seguente.
Rifare una prova generale non è una cosa da poco, specialmente quando si ha un cast di circa 5000 persone!
Non ci voglio pensare, fortunatamente hanno organizzato una festa nella sala del catering, finalmente ci si rilassa un po', c'è musica e grandi quantità di birra e vodka!

26/10 Siamo 2 fotografi e un videomaker, vogliamo uscire dallo stadio, fare un giro di giorno in città, cercare un mercato, incontrare un po' di gente comune. Fino ad ora ho visto sempre le stesse strade, la sfavillante parte nuova della città con quartieri nati nel giro di 2/3 mesi.

Riusciamo a farci dare un'autista, non solo, abbiamo anche un'interprete che vive proprio ad Asgabat.
Andiamo al mercato, incontriamo gente, facciamo shopping e scattiamo qualche foto di nascosto!

Sulla via del ritorno ci fermiamo sotto casa della nostra amica perche doveva cambiarsi.
Scatto una foto di nascosto dall'auto, poi scendo; la situazione pare tranquilla.

C'è un piccolo parco giochi con tanti ragazzini, quando ci vedono impazziscono di gioia: vogliono farsi fotografare!

Saverio è a terra che si rotola con loro sulla sabbia del parco. Finalmente qualche scena di vita quotidiana.

Torno allo stadio, c'è la seconda prova generale che ci aspetta.
La prova va molto meglio e siamo tutti più rilassati.

27/10.
Come ogni giorno mi ritrovo con Saverio per strada ad aspettare un mezzo che mi porti allo stadio.
Dopo un'ora e mezza ci troviamo su una specie di pulmino, fuori piove molto.
Oggi è un giorno relativamente tranquillo, ne approfitto per riorganizzare il materiale fotografico e fare un giro negli "scantinati dello stadio".
Passo attraverso l'enorme struttura di tubi innocenti che regge lo schermo a led.

Mi trovo nei locali seminterrati dello stadio, ci sono vari magazzini, centinaia di bauli, migliaia di bottigliette d'acqua e una squadra di cinesi che lavorano ininterrottamente.
I cinesi di cui parlo sono lì da giorni, aggiustano i pannelli dell'enorme schermo a led che finora ha dato un bel po' di problemi.
Riusciranno ad aggiustarlo per tempo?? Verranno eliminati quelle specie di coriandoli colorati che compaiono qua e la sullo schermo?? Non so, comunque ce la stanno mettendo tutta! Ci sono anche i Turchi di Polimesk che lavorano con loro.

Giornata tranquilla, finita a casa con un esilarante film comico sul mio mac.
28/10 Oggi il grande giorno!
Mi ritrovo alla fermata del bus, riesco a prendere un auto, miracolo!
Siamo quasi allo stadio ma dobbiamo scendere dall'auto. La strada che porta allo stadio è stata chiusa per motivi di sicurezza.
Sarà una giornata dura dove non mancheranno i problemi!
Faccio un giro con Saverio per capire un po' come la sicurezza del presidente reagirà al nostro passare.
E' pomeriggio e già c'è una strana atmosfera di controllo nello stadio.
Subito veniamo fermati e ci chiedono chi siamo. "Siete giornalisti??" No, lavoriamo per k-events ecccc
Dopo un po' ci lasciano passare ma veniamo bloccati all'ingresso della tribuna. Dobbiamo tornare indietro perché stanno bonificando l'area con i cani anti esplosivo…
Poi arrivano quattro persone con strane borse da pesca, sono i cecchini!
Sono le 18, manca un'ora dall'inizio dello show, è meglio muoversi, non so cosa mi aspetta!
Dopo 4/5 controlli riesco ad arrivare nella mia postazione, sono al centro/alto della tribuna; sotto di me c'è il presidente e davanti ho 4/5 energumeni che mi obbligano a stare seduto.
Lo show inizia, per fortuna sono qui, ho la posizione giusta per lavorare ma devo stare attento a come mi muovo, potrebbero mandarmi via!

Siamo nel cuore della cerimonia, anche gli uomini della sicurezza sono entusiasmati dallo show c'è anche chi fotografa lo spettacolo con il telefonino.
Arriva il momento dei fuochi d'artificio: non ho mai sentito colpi così forti! Speriamo bene…
Grande lavoro, come al solito, dei nostri amici dei fuochi: la ditta Parente (www.parente.it) tra i migliori del mondo!

Lo show è terminato, è stato un'enorme successo! Sono tutti commossi, l'impegno è stato altissimo e le difficoltà avevano smesso di contarle.

Il turkmenistan è un paese difficile, c'è una dittatura, la libertà è praticamente inesistente e turisti non esistono!
Anche se le persone comuni sono molto tranquille e gentili.
Una grande festa mi aspetta, stessa location: il catering!
29/10 ore 17:00! riesco ad arrivare allo stadio con l'autista del mio coinquilino Nicola; Saverio è partito ieri.
Siamo stati al mercato coperto, ho appena mangiato un ottimo kebab; stasera è l'ultima ad Adgabat.
Siamo io e Jury in ufficio e vogliamo andare a cena fuori, dopo una settimana di catering qui allo stadio.
Riusciamo ad andare in un ristorante insieme agli amici dell'amministrazione, un posto tranquillo dove mangiamo discretamente...almeno abbiamo cambiato aria.
E' quasi ora di partire, so che sarà un viaggio lungo e difficile ma ho troppa voglia di tornare a casa!
E' stata un'esperienza importante, un lavoro difficile, portato a termine nel migliore dei modi.
Ho conosciuto Saverio, un ottimo fotografo, un amico con il quale sicuramente vivrò qualche altra avventura.
Ore 10:00 Sono a Roma Fiumicino, dopo la solita attesa per i bagagli sono fuori l'aereoporto, che bel paese l'Italia!

Due mesi fa ho notato quei due fantastici alberelli: gli unici due sulla piana di Campo Imperatore abbastanza forti da reggere il carico di una slackline di circa 40 metri.
Sapevo che quello spot era ideale per una foto sensazionale che facesse sognare gli slackers.
I miei amici hanno subito accettato la proposta di andare a provare.
Ore 6e30 AM: Arrivo a casa di Roberto (alias Babuz); dopo qualche minuto arrivano anche Feccia e Rui.
Partiamo subito per la Piana di Campo Imperatore.

Siamo euforici ma il tempo non promette niente di buono.

Inizia ad albeggiare, dopo un po' di curve arriviamo sulla Piana, il cielo è grigio scuro ma ogni tanto si affaccia il sole per illuminare con la luce calda dell'alba la piana.

Dopo un po' di strada bianca e una breve camminata arriviamo sul posto.
C'è vento forte e fa freddo.
Riusciamo finalmente a tendere la fune. Abbiamo le mani fredde!

Il vento la fa oscillare ininterrottamente la slck ed emette uno strano sibilo.
Non è facile starci su!

Rui cerca di domare la fune impazzita!

All'improvviso Roberto parte deciso e affronta senza sforzo i primi metri; improvvisamente esce il sole e si intravede un'arcobaleno dietro di lui.
Il paesaggio è lunare.

Siamo un po' stanchi dall'intesa mattinata ma soddisfatti del lavoro svolto.
Nella mia macchina ci sono buoni scatti, non vedo l'ora di trasferirli sul mio mac e caricarli sul blog per Voi!
Ho scattato anche qualche foto con Eos 3 a pellicola con un bel vetrino davanti: ef 35mm 1,4L Pellicola Kodak t-maz 400. Presto nuove foto online!

Two months ago ago I saw those two trees, the only ones on the plain of Campo Imperatore strong enough to withstand the load of a 30 meter slackline.
I knew that this was an ideal spot for a picture sensation that made the dream of slackers.
My friends immediately agreed to go and try.
6:30 PM We start right away to the plain of Campo Imperatore. We are euphoric but the weather did not promise anything good.
We arrive on the plain of Campo Imperatore, the sky is dark gray but sometimes the sun rises to illuminate by the warm light the plain.
We arrive on site after a little dirt road and a short walk
There is a strong wind and it's cold.
We finally stretch the rope. Our hands are cold! the wind swings the slack and continuously emits a strange hissing sound.
It is not easy to walk on slack
Babuz walks the fine and effortlessly tackles the first few meters, suddenly the sun comes out and sees a rainbow behind him.
The landscape is lunar.
I make several shots, even with the use of my colleague "Elinchrome Ranger Quadra", a 400w portable flash!
Unfortunately, the rain comes and we are forced to flee; collect the material and return to town.
We are a little 'tired but happy with the work done

A day with Daniele "Giotto" Giuliani

Conosco Daniele da oltre 15 anni, abbiamo iniziato a dipingere nello stesso periodo e nella stessa città, poi un giorno ci incontrammo per una convention.
Non molto tempo dopo ho smesso di dipingere su i muri; Daniele ha continuato per la sua strada, è diventato un'artista vero oltre che un personaggio fuori dalle righe.
Ha esposto le sue opere in molte parti d'Italia ma anche oltreoceano: a New York, Manhattan.
Ci siamo incontrati poco tempo fa, a L'Aquila, la nostra città. E' passato molto tempo dall'ultima volta che ci siamo visti e sono successe molte cose, belle e brutte.
Gli ho proposto un lavoro per la mia palestra di arrampicata, El Cap a L'Aquila, un lavoro semplice e veloce per lui ma di grande effetto. Ha preso subito a cuore la cosa.
Il 12 ottobre 2011 riapriva finalmente al pubblico, dopo oltre 2 anni, la storica sala di arrampicata El Cap di L'Aquila, la prima in città e tra le prime in italia.
E' stato il tremendo terremoto del 6 Aprile 2009 che ci ha costretti a stare chiusi per questi 2 anni; ci voleva qualcosa di diverso per iniziare in bellezza questa nuova era e Daniele era la persona giusta.

Daniele è un personaggio unico, non ama essere fotografato, sono stato molto fortunato ad avere avuto questa possibilità!
Tra noi è nato subito un grande feeling, lui era felice di creare qualcosa con me; anche io con lui.
Ha scelto un'ottima location per lo shooting.
Un posto moderno, uno dei migliori ristoranti d'Italia dove Daniele ha dipinto a spray un vero capolavoro.

Sono felice del lavoro svolto ma soprattutto di avere passato piacevoli momenti con Lui e di aver riallacciato un rapporto di amicizia che durerà per sempre.

I know Daniel about 15 years ago, we started to paint with aerosol bomb in the same year.
I stopped but he became real artist, he is a big shot!
He has exhibited his works in many parts of Italy but also overseas, in manhattan.
We met again after many years. I suggested a quick and easy job for him, a piece for the opening of El Cap.
El Cap is Climbing Wall in L'Aquila, Italy.
On 12 October 2011 El Cap opened its doors to the people.
El Cap was closed because of the terrible earthquake of 6 Aprile 2009. The heartquake destroyed a big part of L'Aquila (my town).
Daniele is a special man, He does not like being photographed! I am very lucky to do so.
At first he was very agitated, even I.
after a few shots there was a great feeling between us, Daniel was happy to create something with me, too!
Daniel has chosen an excellent location for the shooting: Elodia
Elodia is a modern location, it is one of the best restaurant in Italy. Daniele has painted a masterpiece here.
I can not describe well this fantastic person; on his web site you can find all the info and the curiosity about him, his stories and his works.

I did not know the location chosen by Daniele, also I'm not an expert portrait photographer.
I brought with me all my favorite lenses, my intent is always to surprise people with my shots, but in this case I wanted to particularly impress him.
I'm happy, I did a good job. but the best thing were the moments I spent with him and I resumed a friendship that will last forever.

I returned in Arco, after the fantastic experience as route setter in the pre-event 2010.
The work was very difficult for the hot weather
I'm very happy for the excellent work we have done.

The last week I was in Ukraina to work as official K-Events photographer.
K-Events, parts of Filmaster Group, is a company specializing in creation and production of events.
K-events was declared the Best Event Agency at the European BEA awards in 2009, a title it has claimed three times in the last four years.
To celebrate the 75° birtday of Shaktar Footbal Club the company organized a spectacular event in one of the most beautiful and modern stadium in Europe: The Don Bass Arena

This is my first indoor time lapse test.
I was in L'Aquila during "13° Internetional Judo Trophy City of L'Aquila"
I used 5d mkii camera with canon 24mm ts-e and ef 15mm fisheye lens
I placed the camera on the rail in three different places. To stop the camera I used Manfrotto Magic Arm.
first clip: a picture every 4 second, slowdown 67% (final cut 7)
second clip: a picture every 2 second, slowdown 78% (fc7)
third clip: a picuter every 4 second, no slowdown.

We were in Rome to shoot some time lapse to be included in the video.
We worked in front of the Coliseum and the Altar of the Fatherland. Spectacular places.

Swup Night Shooting

My friend Andrea Uzzo called me saying: do you want to do a photo shooting at the Swup Snow Park in the night?
I immediately accepted!
I prepared the bags with all the equipment suitable for this job: Elinchrom Ranger Quadra with remote flash control, EOS 1D, EOS 5D mkii, Canon EF 70-200 f2.8L, Canon TS-E 24mm f3.5 L, Canon EF 24-70 f2.8L and canon 15mm 2.8 fisheye.

March 26; 6:00 PM We start from the base of the chairlift "Brecciara" with the snowcat. It is driven by Massimino, an expert pilot!
we stop the arrival of cableway s to take a case of beer; beers are essential for these night jobs!
I'm at the park, the light is perfect for sunset shots with the flash.
We must immediately begin the photo session, the riders have to jump start before it's too late because the sun is about to end. it is important to take the moment!

Few jumps are enough to make the right picture!
We take a break because the snow is not hard enough and you're ruining the ramp.
10PM: Riders start to jump again on the big ramp.

I do some very interesting photos through the snow cat shovel.
I approach the jump to take macro pictures of snow crystals and photo with splashes of snow near the ramp.

The riders are tired, we move all to the structure with the Hitching Post, I shoot the last pictures and and then we go on the snowcat to go back : 12 people on the snow cat, a great record.
Then a descent in total darkness up to the cars. Great day, great fun and I hope, spectacular photos. What do you think?

Nissan Xtreme Verbier 2011

I could not miss the 16th edition of the Xtreme Verbier.
I prepared my camper and I went to Verbier for the third time. For a trip of only 880 km!
The Xtreme is the most anticipated event of the freeride where will be crowned world champions in both freeride ski and snowboard.
The Swiss weather forecast predicted bad weather for which the race was moved to 20/3
We had two days for skiing and for the first time we have found great powder in Verbier resort, a great gift of Heaven in this period!
As had been predicted by the Swiss forecast, the weather was perfect!
The snow was soft and a lot more than the first day in Verbier
There were all the conditions for an event to remember!
Let's go back a little back in time.

Today there is already a big party on the streets of Verbier, music and entertainment along the
road through the village to the start of the cableway of Medran
At 5e30pm, finally, the "open Ceremony" begins, the best raiders in the world go up on stage to take the race number.
The ceremony is over, I shot the photo with all 37 athletes, skiing and snowboarding, men and women.

Today is expected to "Dakine Freeride Junior" but because of poor visibility has been canceled and postponed to the next day, after the big race.
Let's go skiing, snowing a lot, we ski on the slopes of Nendaz where visibility is better.

Finally the race day has arrived!
Wake up at 6:30. We walked across the center of Verbier and get to Medran. It 's a great climb with a backpack weighing about 10kg.
In the bag I had: 2 cameras (EOS 5D MKII and EOS 7D), Canon 300 f/2.8L IS, 2 Extender (EF 1.4x and EF 2x), Canon 24-105L, Canon 15mm fisheye lens, filters, batteries etc..
My assistant Kappa and I arrive early in the Col Des Gentiane where was the area set up for the event: great reception for media and guests: tables with benches covered with soft fur throws and blankets not know which animal, chairs and soft puff placed on the snow, a big tent with a buffet, a stage for the ceremony, stand and lots of music!
Where to stand to get a good view over the race mountain?
The media area was actually too far even for my 600mm lens!
I go down, My position now seems ok............

The women competition starts: Janette Hargin (SWE) down the slope skiing
fast and aggressive, jumping from a rock about ten meters, for her victory is assured.
In the field of snowboarding is Anne-Flore Marxer to win.

Now is the time for men.
Their departure is about 300 meters higher than the women, men start from the top of the mountain where the slope is around the 50/54 degrees!

The race is exciting, the raiders come down too fast, on the top the snow does not even seem the best, i think that a lot of wind there was in the night.
Do not miss accidents and small avalanches, but fortunately nothing serious.
When the race is almost over I see, through my telephoto lens, a man dressed in red and white down rather fast speed, comes like a lightning bolt on top of a huge rock cliff 20 meters and then he immediately tackles another. He is Aurelien Ducroz, once again the winner of the Xtreme Verbier Freeride World Champion 2011. Masterful, as usual, also the run by Xavier de Le Rue, who was also repeatedly leading the Xtreme.

I walk back to the Col des Gentianes. I'm entering in the large white tent where I refreshed with great food and look forward to the awarding of the most courageous athletes on the planet.

It 's over the party, go back down over 2000m, leaving the winter and entering in the hot spring town of Verbier.
I always expect those 900 km to get home in L'Aquila.
I'm glad to have lived once again the party of the Xtreme Verbier, but also for having skied on the soft snow that fell in these days .... Is this not enough??

The job has been very tiring because after to have prepared the climbing routes I took in hand the heavy canon 300mm f2,8 to take photos!

The lens wich i used were the ef 300mm f2,8 is and the 24-105 f4 is.
I used also the magic arm to take picture from above of the climbing wall.

The climbing wall with the boulder problems

Today is possible to climb because there is a green big pad under the climbing wall.
We have tried the boulder problems in the morning. The boulders are very difficult!
After lunch we went to Torbole beach to swim in the Garda Lake.
In the afternoon we trace new boulder line. We don't climb because is too hot!

The third round of the Italian Cup series arrives at Campo Felice near L'Aquila the Italian city that was ravaged last year by a huge earthquake.
I arrived later on friday evening.
Saturday was the practice day. The race track is very difficult and dangerous.
I have chosen a good position to take photos.
In front of me there was the big jump and on the left i saw a wonderful curve.
I used eos 1d mkii camera and canon ef 300mm 2,8 is to take photos.

The winner: Wyn Masters (NZ) - Eos 1dmkii + EF 300mm f2,8 is; 1/5000 f2,8 iso 160

I was very happy because there are a lot of famous riders such as: the Australian Shaun O’Connor e Rhys Willemse and Wyn Masters (NZ) e Matt Scoles (NZ).
Sunday was the competition day.
The italian (and local rider) Francesco Petrucci (Ancillotti Team) was the number 3 in the starting list but he has fallen during the race.
The best rider was Wyn Masters with an incredible time: 2'30"82!

Roma Eco Marathon: Frascati (Roma) 30 May 2010

9:00 My crew and I are in Tuscolum (6 km from Frascati). Tusculum is one of the largest and most beautiful Roman cities in Alban Hills. The ruins of Tusculum are located on Tuscolo hill.
9:30 We are waiting for the athletes.

Today I use the new F-Stop Satori photo backpack.
In the backpack there are:

In the morning we visited the spices marker in Douz's and then We left for Ksar Ghilane by Slim's Toyota
Ksar Ghilane is a little oasi, it is the Tunisian southest oasis. The oasis is near the doors of the Grand Oriental Erg

We stopped for a tea in a bar situated middle of the desert, the temp erature is 45° outside the car!

We arrived through sands track 100km long at Ksar Ghilane. The temperature was 50°!

The wind is so strong it was impossible to take the camera outside!

He is very nice! Matteo is a good driver and a rider. He is a Rally assistant by his truck. He give assistance during the Tunisia Rally .

In the evening wind has fallen so I photographed Aurelio on the little dunes around the oasis.
We had dinner in PanSea Village, we ate cus-cus and many tunisian specialities.
I spended a delightful evening with my new friends.

The Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy), also simply known as The Giro, is a long distance road bicycle racing stage race for professional cyclists held over three weeks in May/early June in and around Italy. It is one of the three Grand Tours, and is part of the UCI World Ranking calendar. The most recent winner (2009) is the Russian cyclist Denis Menchov of the Dutch team Rabobank.
On 19 May the Giro arrived in L'Aquila, my town.
I used the new canon 300mm f2,8is telephoto lens to take cycling photos under the heavy rain.
I transported the super telephoto by new Satori F-stop photo backpack;
I chose the streatch of road in the middle of the last curve of Tempera and the speedway entrance (L'Aquila est) for my photos
It rained heavy all the time!
The camera and the 300mm lens are perfect to work when it rains because they are tropicalize!

There were some Dario Cataldo's supporter (Quick Steat Team) that offered me sausages and red wine.I saw a tight boy that ran with all the racing cyclist carrying a beer What funny sight!

A month ago my friend Aurelio called me to speak about a travel in Tunisia. After the big success of "Prehistoric Art Rock Trail" in Lybian Sahara, Aurelio would like to organize on February 2010 a 100km trail runner competition in Tunisian desert.
I love to take photos in a new country especially for a running competition. I accepted the invitation!
Giorno 1/2: 10-11 Maggio 2010
We left from Fiumicino airport (Rome) on Monday evening because of two incident on GRA (Rome - Fiumicino line) we missed the morning flight!
We arrived in Tunisi at 11 pm. Outside the airport of Tunisi we met our guide. Slim is a nice boy that speaks italian very well. The next day we left Tunisi to go to Douz, the south of Tunisia. Tunisi to Douz is approximately 500km.
We stopped for a tea in a typical restaurant/bar on the top of an hill.

Aida is the boss of the restaurant, she is a french artist, a painter and a good cook!

We tasted mint tea with pinoli and home made bread soaked in first quality olive-oil. Very good!

11:00 am We arrived at Kairouan. We visited the big mosque of Uqba. Built by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi from 670 A.D. (the year 50 according to the Islamic calendar) at the founding of the city of Kairouan, the mosque is spread over a surface area of 9,000 square metres and is considered as the oldest place of worship in the western Islamic word, as well as a model for all later mosques in the Maghreb.
It was the first time to visit a mosque, what spectacular view!

On the evening we arrived at Chott-el-Jerid. This is the biggest salted lake in Tunisia. This is a wonderful place: a huge expanse of whites salt crystals.

Trail Running photography: the beginning

"The Pioneers of Gran Sasso Ultra Trail". Campo Imperatore Canyon, Italy

When i I begun to take photos during running trail competitions, Action Photography started to be my job.
Aurelio Michelangeli, my friend, introduced me as a photographer into the world of Running Trail.
Aurelio is one of the most active in the promotion of Trail Running Trail in Italy. He is the inventor of the Eco Maraton in Italy: The Ecomaraton of Collelongo (about 42 km running in the nature).
I'm the official photographer of "Parks Trail" that is the biggest trail running race circuit in my country: 22 laps and 5000 athletes in 2009.
In the "2010 Parks Trail program" there are 32 laps: 5 Ecomarathon, 1 Ultra Trail and 26 Trail!
The last week Aurelio said: "in 2010 10000 athletes will join the Parks Trail!
In december 2007 my crew (Elsa and Roberto) and I spent 5 days in the Sahara Desert to make the photo and video reportage of the "Prehistoric Art Rock Trail"
The "Prehistoric Art Rock Trail" is a 100km extreme running composed by 4 stage.
it was a hard job but i was very satisfied for the result!
Two monts after I founded Risk4Sport Action Photography that today is an important part of my life.
In the last 2 year I took pictures in about 70 trail running competition!

Canon ef 24mm ts-e L reviews

The Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L Tilt-Shift Lens is (update: before 2009) Canon's only L Series Tilt-Shift lens. It is a great choice for architecture and wide landscape photography. I use this lens also for sports and reportage photography.
Tilt, Shift and Rotate are the adjustment that can be used individually or simultaneously to alter the relationship of the optical axis of the lens to the sensor plane.

I love the Tilt adjustment because it creates extraordinary effect.

Turning the small (too small) tilt adjustment knob angles the lens up to +/- 8 degrees relative to the sensor plane. The result is a plane of sharp focus that is not parallel to the sensor plane.
The plane of sharp focus follows the direction of the tilt of the lens.

Use this feature to selectively keep objects in or out of focus in the picture. It is surprising how much background blur a relatively slow (f/3.5) 24mm lens can produce when tilted significantly. Diffusely blur the non-subject portion of your picture to dramatically direct the viewer's eye to the subject.

A shift adjustment moves the lens sideways parallel to the sensor plane. The effect of shift is perspective distortion, The uses for this functionality are many. Shifting enables sides of tall buildings to be made parallel, instead of converging lines.
Are you unable to get the shot from the proper position because of an obstacle? Simply move to the side and shift the lens to give the perspective you wanted from the blocked position.

The Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L Tilt-Shift Lens can also rotate. A small release unlocks the up-to-180-degree rotational movement of the TS-E lenses.

All Canon TS-E lenses use good old fashion manual focus only. Manual focus at a wide aperture setting is easy to miss with the standard focusing screens shipping on Canon's current DSLRs.

Live Views helps tremendously to take the correct focus but in sport photography not always is possible to use it.
The Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L Tilt-Shift Lens inspires creativity. The results can be stunning. If you are looking for a simple point and shoot lens, a TS-E lens is probably not for you.

Kaj Zackrisson wins the Xtreme Verbier 2010

Also this year I have taken part to the Xtrem Verbier like credited photographer.
I love to take photograph of extreme sports like freeride ski: the "Xtreme Verbier" is the most famous event of this fantastic sport.
This is the fifteenth edition of the Xtreme
I have met and photographed the most famous skiers and snowboarders in the world!

On 19 I made the recognition of the race area with the Swedes Kaj Zackrisson, Henrick Windstedt and Reine Barkered and the americans Jt Holmes and Tim Dutton; Tim is very nice!

In the evening the opening ceremony has been in the central place and all the riders are introduced to the spectators.

The race day was rich in action but the last six riders have not made the contest because the fog arrived on the top of the mountain.

The contest was made on the next thuesday!
Great show during this edition of Xtreme Verbier!
I'm very happy because Kaj Zackrisson (my best-loved rider) won the contest.
The world freeride champion in snowboard category is also this year the french man Xavier De Le Rue; French freestyle legend Candite Thovex can now claim to be part freeriding history. For his first season on the Freeride World Tour he has proved to be a consistent freerider competitor (3 podium) with committed and influential skiing.

On April 6th 2009 a strong earthquake (6.3 mw) hit L'Aquila. It caused 308 deaths and 65000 displaced people. About 15000 buildings were seriously damaged. I have taken some photos of urban bouldering on destroyed and uninhabited buildings. Just as, while climbing, we fight in order to go a difficult trouble through, so along lifetime we struggle to overcome all the misadventures and difficulties we face. Thanks to this sport, my friend and my brother (the climber in the picture) have found a good reason to keep on fighting, despite the serious discomfort and uneasiness we have been experiencing since that day.

category culture/playlife:The Verbiere Xtreme is the most important free-ride event in the world. The race is reserved to the first 8 ski men of the world rankings. But also some of the “wild cards” can have access to it like i.e. Bjorn Heregger, the winner of the race in Nendaz. During the presentation of the raiders in the central square of Verbier, I saw Bjorn Heregger to see and touch the pectoral of the race with a great joy. For him, to participate to the Verbier Xtreme 2009 was like a dream come true!

Campo Imperatore is an odd and particular place. During the winter, moist air currents from the nearby sea, in contact with very cold surfaces, often create strange and spectacular effects out of the ice. This small building is the refuge Duca degli Abruzzi, where many of the Gran Sasso free-riders use to rest. The sat boy is Jack, having a break before skiing down the steep slope towards the beautiful Maone valley

I spent 5 days in the Sahara desert as a photographer to follow an extreme marathon: the prehistoric artrock trail 2008. The Akakus desert is one of the most fascinating on the earth. In some moments I thought I was on Mars! When I saw that huge arch of rock I could not resist. I waited until the first athletes passed by to take a picture and show how big it was. The desert is a magical place, but it is also a harsh environment where only athletes with a great personality can run.

The athlete in the photo, Mark Perrone, is running the 3rd round of the "Akakus prehistoric rock art trail”, which is about 42 km long. When I took this picture I thought I was on another planet, rather than being on the earth. I saw the athletes’ faces. They were happy but at the same time they looked destroyed by the great difficulty due to the sand and the arid climate. The red flag in the foreground is one of the only 30 signs placed along the 42km long route. It is very easy to take the wrong way!

This is my first eos 5d mkii snow movie!
The movie is filmed around Campo Imperatore: "Duca degli Abruzzi", "Campo Pericoli", "Sella di Monte Aquila", "The amphitheater of Schioppaturo".
The short movie is only a test of what we can make with our means, our fantastic mountains and our rider (Os Freeride Team).
Unfortunately this season now is not rich of snow! We are making every day the dance of the powder!

12 January (the first sun day of 2010), I have made the first "Gran Sasso photo shooting of the year 2010". I arrived to the top of the Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi, where Rob and Andrea has jumped and come down the north face (Campo Pericoli). The fog has arrived so we have walked towards "Sella di Monte Aquila" where the riders have made the best run of the day.

Happy new year! Great snow condition in Chamonix

I have left L'Aquila (Italy) to go to Chamonix for to pass the end of the year.
Chamonix is the best freeriding resort in Europe, a spectacular place at the foot of Mont Blanc.
Between 30 and 31 december have fallen more than 80 cm of powder snow, with exceptional conditions on "Les Grands Montets"!
Unfortunately I could not make out the camera from my backpack, I was too busy skiing with my friends and the snow was too good to stop and take pictures!!
When I return to Courmayeur (Italy) I was able to photograph my friend: the Mountain guide Stefano Bigio riding the "Toula Glacier" with fantastic weather and snow conditions, after days and days of continuous snowfall !
I am not only a photographer, i'm a rider, i love powder! When there are exceptional snow conditions is very difficult to take the camera and stop skiing!
But I am sure that this shot, at this moment, remains the only memory of that perfect snow condition!

I'm working on a project for the winter season of trail running I need a few clicks on a winter landscape, so I chose Campo Imperatore (L'Aquila-Italy).
The spectacular landscape of the plain of Campo Imperatore, the snowly dunes under "Monte Scindarella" are perfect for this type of photography.
The working group consists of Elsa, my wife and my friend Aurelio, who is the creator of one of the greatest trail running racing circuit in Italy (p arkstrail.it).
I also called Fabrizio (risk4sport crew) for some backstage shots.
Elsa, Fabrizio and I left L'Aquila at 10:00 , Aurelio came from Avezzano. We met in Fonte Cerreto (Assergi).
At 10:30 I was ready to photograph.

I made the first pictures to the amphitheater of "Shioppaturo" a few hundred meters from the road to the Hotel Campo Imperatore: I took many pictures against the North Face of the mountain because it was more snow and gave a greater sense of cold and winter.

After about 1 hour we went to photograph the east area of"Campo Imperatore's plain", where are three typical small trees, the only trees in the big plain.

At 13:30 we went to eat at Refuge "Racollo"where We ate traditional dishes: soup of farro and lentils and lamb with potatoes. The "Refuge Racollo" is a nice place to sleep and eat well.
After lunch I saw the colors and the beautiful afternoon light so I decided to take more pictures with Aurelio who was running with a full stomach!

Monte Calvo Bike Shooting

Yesterday I and my brothers Roberto went to try outdoor the new equipment during a bike tour.
The tour start at 10:00 from Santi (L'Aquila Italy) and finished at 16:00 in the same place.
We arrived by car at the "Monte Calvo Antennas Tower". From this place we arrived by 2 Kona Coilair delux 2008 MTB about 150 vertical meters from the summit of Mountain Calvo (1898m).
During the bike tour we used all the equipment available. We drove long distances by a deep snow stretch!

The downhill was very long, we made very nice shots, the scenery was really beautiful!

I tested the new flash kit "Elinchrom Rander Quadra standard set A head" carried in a Dakine Sequence Photo backpack.
I am very pleased with the great portability of this kit: The Ranger Quadra AS is a compact portable 400 Ws battery flash system for studio and outdoor use. A perfect battery flash system for anybody who like un-plugged (not connected to the mains) photography. The RQ System offers "Action Freezing" flashduration with fast flash recycling time and also un-plugged (wireless) trigger and remote options.
The set content:

The total weight is about 3,600 kg
The Ranger Quadra system work with Elinchrom Skyport wireless Trigger.
I work also with Pocket Wizzrd plus II but the EL Skiport Trasmitter have a Buttons to change flash power settings of RX units and to switch Modelling lamp on/off. It is more important in difficult outdoor situation.

Lens and Camera equipment:

1× Canon EF 24-105mm f4 L
1× Sigma 12-24mm f4-5,6
1× B+W Kaesemann Circular Polarized (mounted on 24-105mm)

The lens, the camera, the tripod and the accessories (battery, filter, etc) are carried in Dakine Mission Photo backpack.
